For my 3rd year Final Project i wanted to take a look at the growing popularity behind Stand Up Paddleboarding. In the last 4 or 5 years SUP has become more and more popular and its benefits have appealed to a wide variety of people who have since the taken the sport up for whatever reason they have, be it socially, fitness, distance, exploration, surf etc.
In order to show the wide variety of people who paddle board i am constructing a portfolio of people who have a passion for SUP and i am photographing them in their work/casual clothes.
My First shoot for this project was Giles Kent, a Falmouth Firefighter and Paddleboarder at club WeSUP. For this shoot I equipped myself with two 7Ds, a 17-85mm, 50mm, 70-300mm, 18-55mm and a 35mm along with a Metz flash gun and a Canon Flash gun.
My only technical difficulty was the light. First light was at 6:58am and sunrise at 7:30am and i was there at 7. I started of with a flash to bring in some light but the flash kept bringing out the reflector strip in Giles's uniform and ruining the photos. So i had to lose the flash and do my best to use the natural light and turn up my ISO.
Another difficulty was that because of the amount of equipment i had with absolutely no waterproof covers for anything, i was unable to take a board out myself and photograph him offshore as i originally planned. He has agreed to do this again if needed be so i could also further prepare.
Here are a few unedited images straight from the camera to get started on…
